The Pueblo steel mill is a landmark in our state's industrial history and this weekend the Bessemer Historical Society is celebrating their relationship with their big iron neighbor.
In honor of the event, Evraz Rocky Mountain Steel opened their gates to public bus tours on Saturday. The Bessemer community grew up around the steel mill and was officially incorporated into the city of Pueblo 125 years ago.
Saturday's celebration was held at the Steelworks Museum which preserves the mill's archives.
Archivist Tim Hawkins says the mill played crucial role in our state's history.
"I think even many people in Colorado don't realize how Pueblo drove the economy of Colorado for many, many years because of the steel mill and all of the related activities," Hawkins said.
Along with the bus tours, the celebration also included live music, food and an antique car show.
